History of the Experiential Program at SMUS

Where it all began:
The “Pilot” year 2007-2008

This is where the Experiential Program at SMUS formally began!

In 2007, it was a small number of grade 10 students, approximately 20 in total, who formed the first group of students to spend their final term on an altered academic timetable which allowed them to pursue areas of interest beyond the SMUS bubble.

The program included many similar elements to the current program, and ultimately the vision of those who created it, remains in the structure of the Experiential Program today. In fact, some of the faculty who worked to build the program back then are still involved in designing it each year.

The current Experiential Ridgelines & Coastlines Program carries on years of development of outdoor education, and has retained the original vision for the program to be as much about personal growth and character development as it is about the expanding outdoor skills.
