Contemporary Indigenous Studies & Decolonization 12: Cowichan Traditional Dug-out Canoe Field Trip

TRIP DETAILS & LEARNING OUTCOMES:

Students will explore themes of Decolonization, with a local lens, focusing on the traditional lands of the Cowichan Tribes. Students will spend the day with elder and cultural expert Hwiem'tun, in an experiential workshop highlighted by a unique opportunity to be welcomed to paddle a traditional war canoe. Hwiem'tun will also teach students traditional uses for local plants and lead discussions of Indigenous culture and ways of being in the modern world. A SMUS teacher will be accompanying students in the canoe.

***The canoe activity will be weather permitting. If ocean conditions are not safe, students will stay off the water and instead in engage in land-based learning.

LOCATION

The war canoe will be departing from Hecate Park in Cowichan Bay and returning to the same location.

TRAVEL INFORMATION

Students will be travelling by SMUS bus to and from campus with a SMUS bus driver.

CLOTHING

Students should dress for the weather and ensure they have appropriate layers, including rain jacket. Students should have hats and wear sunscreen, as well as bring a water bottle.
