Ahousaht: People & place,
A West coast Cultural Experience

This cohort will explore the natural beauty of Vancouver Island and in particular, Tofino on the West Coast of Vancouver Island. We will build an appreciation for the coastal flora & fauna through expeditions around the South Island and look at the history of the area as it relates to the First Nations population. We will explore the interface between land and human society creating your own ideas about the different ways human society can interact with the land. The cohort will continue to build a relationship with the community and high school at Ahousaht, by visiting the school, interacting socially with the students, and playing together (basketball, cultural exchange).

Ahousaht is a First Nations village, 35/40 minutes north of Tofino. During the pursuit, we will travel there by boat. This is a great opportunity to make a deep connection with this area of the Island, and be immersed in a unique culture.

Each of the 5 expedition days will build a stronger understanding of the west coast environment and first nations people and place. The group will look at the positive and negative affects of Eco-tourism as well as who is involved with land use conversations. The cohort will be visited regularly by such environmental experts as our own Mr. Michael Jackson.

The cohort will visit and continue to strengthen a relationship with the Maaqtusiis High School.

An important element of the Experiential program is building strong relationships with local community members and businesses.
See links to those resources, businesses and community members below.

For the second year in a row, the student will continue to foster a growing friendship with the Maaqtusiis school in Ahousaht, BC. They will visit the high school on their pursuit in June but we will also be hosting their team for a game during the Basketball season.
